  1. We used to have a Lada stationwagon, of which we were very fond. In spite of all the Lada jokes, the thing would pull a trailer with ease, especially on the rare occasions when all the cylinders were firing in order, and the carbureta was not blocked! I did catch sight of two people laughing when they saw that I had gone to the bother of putting one of those giant sized anti theft things on the steering wheel! Probably the Lada's most antisocial quirk was its heating, which was Very good (designed to unthaw Mammoths in Siberia). The problem was that this developed a life of its own, and decided to come on fully for months at a time, usually in the middle of summer! We gave the car away to a private museum, and our last journey was very early one summer's morning, with all the windows open. I still miss the old girl!
